Choosing a Web Host

The research you do regarding this very important decision can save you thousands of dollars and a lot of heartache. A web host rents you space to place your web site on their servers that are connected to the Internet. Hosting fees can vary greatly so you should do some comparison shopping. You don't necessarily want to go with the cheapest host. You want to identify your needs and shop for a host who meets those needs while providing you support services at a fair price.

For example, you have a good idea of what you want your web site to do but, do you know the tools required? And if they do have all the tools you need, are there extra charges above the hosting fee to have access to them?

Questions to ask a perspective host:

1. If I am not happy with the service, can I take all the content on my website elsewhere or is it stuck in your software?
2. If I purchase my domain name through you, am I listed as the "registrant?" Get this in writing. The person or company listed as the registrant OWNS the domain name. Make sure it is your name or you may be stuck with that host for the life of that domain name.
3. Do you do DAILY back ups of all your servers in case a servers crashes?
4. What is your proven "up time?" At times it is necessary for hosts to do maintenance and security updates so no host should claim 100%, however they should have a 99 % claim or above.
5. Do you offer support via email or phone if I discover a problem with my web site? If your web site is down, do you really want to wait for someone to get back to you via email?
